Over 1,000 people attended a special vaccination clinic at the Fazi Mosque in Southfields this Tuesday (8 June).

The event was organised as a follow up to an earlier similarly successful day held in March with those who were vaccinated earlier getting their second dose at the latest event.

Mahmood Rafiq, Head of External Relations for Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK, said, “In Islam, it teaches us to serve humanity. Organising this vaccination clinic is our way of doing that.

“We want to encourage all our members to come forward and get vaccinated.”

Speaking after receiving her vaccination, Mrs Samar Khan said, “The Fazl Mosque has been my community mosque for many years. Catering both for my emotional and spiritual needs.

“Coming to the mosque for my Covid vaccination was very comforting and felt like I was in a safe place and able to focus purely on the vaccination without any other distractions.”

In Wandsworth there are 95 Covid cases per 100,000 people in the latest week, compared to an average of 62 per 100,000 people across England.

Across London, 20% of over 50 year olds have not taken up the offer of the vaccine. This leaves them at risk of getting Covid and increases the chance of having to return to another lockdown.

The event was attended by Putney MP Fleur Anderson who said, “I want to say a big thank you to the Ahmadi Muslim Community for running this big vaccination day.

“An incredible one thousand people are being vaccinated today! That is such an amazing achievement. It is so important that people are getting their second dose of the vaccine.

“It is fantastic to have so many local volunteers from the Fazl Mosque working aside our amazing NHS staff with the common goal of getting us out of this pandemic, because the vaccine is how we do it.

“Days like today genuinely save lives and I am just so grateful to everyone for making it happen.”

After meeting the NHS staff in the vaccination centre, she added, “I notice that all the staff here today are wearing scrubs made by our very own Rosie Taylor-Davies and her team at The Scrubbery (Putney Scrub Hub) just down the road.

“Everyone looks wonderful in their rainbow scrubs and it just further illustrates what a brilliant community effort this day is.”

Also in attendance was Richard Field, Mayor of Wandsworth who said on Twitter, “Invited to the Fazl Mosque by Regional President for Wandsworth Shakeel Ahmed, Grassen Hall Rd, to witness vaccinations at the centre and support the good work organised by @AhmadiyyaUK. The Mayor congratulates NHS on contributions to the vaccination effort.”
