Transport for London (TfL) has announced a new timetable for engineering works on the Piccadilly line which will result in regular disruption through to October.
Nearly half of the weekends until the autumn, beginning with the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, will see part of the line being shut. From Good Friday to Easter Monday there will be no service from Acton Town to Uxbridge.
TfL says that the closures are a necessary part of its a £2.9bn investment programme to help the line run the new fleet of trains which are being introduced this year 2025.
The first new train arrived in London in October 2024 and it will now go through a programme of intensive testing, before starting to enter passenger service by the end of 2025.
The new stock features air-conditioning for the first time on a deep Tube train, wider all-double doorways for boarding and getting off, enhanced digital display screens for customer information, improved step-free access from/onto the platform and on-train CCTV cameras for additional security.
Once the 94 new trains have replaced the 86 existing trains. which date back to 1975, the number of trains through central London could increase from 24 to 27 trains an hour - every 135 seconds - at the busiest times increasing number of passengers that can be carried on the entire Piccadilly line by up to 23% during peak times.
Other changes include adjustment to platform edges and track position and an upgrade to the power system along the line. There will also be modifications to signalling to accommodate the new, longer trains.

At the Northfields depot new facilities are being built to maintain the trains with extra stabling track and cleaning facilities.
Fully upgrading the line-wide signalling to enable automatic train operation with additional trains would allow for a peak service of up to 36 trains an hour in the central area during peak hours, for a 64% increase in capacity compared to current levels and allow a permanent services at Turnham Green station. However, funding is not in place for this project.
