Next Step For Schools Project

Designs for redevelopment of Burntwood School & Southfields Community College submitted

Detailed planning applications have now been submitted for the redevelopment of Burntwood School and Southfields Community College.

The designs, developed by the council's chosen contractor, Bovis Lend Lease, following consultations with the schools, parents and local people.

The schemes have been awarded government funding and aim to vastly improve the outdated learning environments at both schools and provide modern, high quality teaching facilities.

Public consultations on the applications are now underway. To view the plans online and to make a comment visit www.wandsworth.gov.uk/planning - the Southfields application number is 2010/3888 and Burntwood's is 2010/3887.

The proposals for Burntwood centre on creating a university campus style learning environment. Plans include demolishing or refurbishing some of the school's existing facilities and replacing them with six new buildings. These would include a new performing arts building and a business skills centre which would be open to the wider community as well as students.

The project would cost £41m and increase the school's capacity by more than 250 students. If the application is approved work could start in April 2011 with completion expected by the end of 2013.

Plans for Southfields include the refurbishment and remodelling of the 1970s blocks fronting Merton Road and along the site's southern boundary. A new four storey building would be constructed on Burr Road to provide an attractive new entrance to the college grounds. The terraced structure would also provide outdoor learning spaces overlooking a new courtyard and landscaped area.

The project is expected to cost £29m and would increase capacity at the college by approximately 200 students. If approved, work could begin in April 2011 with completion expected by the end of 2013.

Models and plans of the two schemes will be on public display on Thursday 14 October between 2pm and 7pm. The Southfields plan will be at the Aspire Centre, 333 Merton Road, London, SW18 5JU. The Burntwood designs will be at the school's Assembly Hall Foyer, Burntwood Lane, London, SW17 0AQ.

Representatives from the schools, Wandsworth Council and Bovis Lend Lease will be on hand throughout the day to answer any questions and explain more about the projects.
