The Labour Party in Wandsworth has suspended one of its councillors after he made a comment on Twitter about the Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

Peter Carpenter, who represents West Hill ward, made a post on Sunday evening that read, “Rishi Sunak is a complete waste of space. He should go back to India with his billionaire wife.”

Mr Sunak was born in Southampton.

Mr Carpenter has since completely deleted his Twitter account.

Simon Hogg, the leader of the Labour Group in the borough has said that Mr Carpenter has been suspended from the party and will not be contesting the seat in the forthcoming election.

According to the On London web site Mr Hogg has told party colleagues not to circulate the tweet and make no comment on it. He added that it was likely that the Conservatives would make use of the tweet in their campaign material.

We reported earlier that Cllr Carpenter was intending to stand again but this was incorrect and he had already opted not to stand for re-election.

The Labour Party has selected Daniel Shearer, Flavio Ravara and Angela Ireland as its candidates. The third seat in the ward is held by the Independent Malcolm Grimston.

He said on social media, “Peter Carpenter has been an intelligent voice on Wandsworth Council for some years, in both Roehampton and West Hill Wards - it is a shame to see his career end like this but the Labour group clearly had no choice but to suspend him.

Nationally the Labour Party see the borough of Wandsworth as a key target having significantly reduced the Conservative majority in 2018.
