Devon Double For Dons

A win and a defeat in West Country tour

The Dons’ weekend mini-tour of Devon produced a win over Tiverton Town followed by defeat against League One side Exeter City.

On Friday (July 30) a side primarily made up of squad and reserve-team players came from behind to beat Tiverton Town 2-1. Jack Turner was beaten from the penalty spot soon after half-time, but goals from Karl Douglin (set up by Bill Hussey) and Delano Sam-Yorke (from a Wilson Gondwe cross) gave the Dons the win.

A stronger starting XI took on Exeter the following day (July 31) and acquitted themselves better than the 2-1 defeat suggests.

The Dons fell behind early on when Daniel Nardiello curled an effort home. But the Dons were holding their own and were back on level terms a short while later when Sam Hatton’s low cross was turned home at the far post by Jon Main.

Despite further opportunities for the Dons going begging, it was the home side who got the only other goal when, with 20 minutes remaining, veteran forward Jamie Cureton fired home Jake Thomson’s cross.

The Dons now have one remaining pre-season fixture – against an Arsenal XI at Kingsmeadow next Saturday (August 7) before the Blue Square Bet Premier season gets underway with a visit to Southport the following week.
