Local schools perform better than last year
Merton schools have had another good set of GCSE results, with 8.6% more students achieving 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C, exceeding the 2009 national average by 7.8%.
The increase takes the number of Merton secondary school students attaining 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C to 77.8%, up from 69.2% last year and above the national average for 2009 of 70%. This represents an improvement of 29.6% over a five-year period.
There have also been improvements in the results for students gaining 5 or more GCSE's at A*-C, including English and maths, with more than half (53.6%) attaining these grades, more than the borough's Government target for 2010 of 50%. This represents an increase of 14.1% over a five-year period.

Adult students at Merton Adult Education (MAE) also had good results in both AS level and GCSE exams.
This year, 91 per cent of students at MAE achieved passes in GCSEs with one in four exams scoring an A* - A grade. French, Spanish and Italian language students at the college passed with flying colours this year as 93.8% achieved A*- B passes.
Students sitting their AS level exams were also rewarded for their efforts with 88 per cent achieving passes. AS level exam entries more than doubled this year and new courses German and Italian demonstrated success in their first year as all students passed and 88.3 per cent scored A – B grades.
Councillor Peter Walker, cabinet member for education said: "Merton's GCSE results continue to improve reflecting the hard work of schools, teachers and, of course, young people in the borough.
"We are really pleased to have made further progress in improving GCSE results in the Borough. However, we are not complacent and we will continue to work with schools to ensure standards continue to rise and that young people in our schools can achieve at the highest level."

"We are committed to continuing our focus on raising educational standards in Merton and to giving schools more freedom and choice so they can deliver even better results. That’s why – unlike the Borough’s new minority Labour administration – Conservatives in Merton will encourage local schools to consider the opportunity provided by the Government to apply for Academy status if they wish to do so."
