Pope Benedict To Stay In Wimbledon


Three-night papal stop in SW19

The Pope will be staying in Wimbledon during his four-day visit to Britain later this month.

Pope Benedict XVI will be staying at the Apostolic Nunciature in Parkside Avenue, overlooking Wimbledon Common, from Thursday September 16 until Sunday September 19.

Pope Benedict To Stay In Wimbledon The nunciature (left) is the home of Archbishop Faustino Sainz Muñoz, who acts as the Pope's ambassador to Britain. It was also used by Pope John Paul II during his visit almost 30 years ago.

The Pope's itinerary includes a private celebration of mass in the chapel at the nunciature at 8am on Friday September 17.

Pope will be staying in WimbledonFrom there he will visit Twickenham, Lambeth Palace, Westminster Cathedral, Vauxhall and Hyde Park. He will also receive courtesy calls from political leaders, David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Harriet Harman.

His stay in Wimbledon will end with an 8.45am flight on a helicopter taking off from Wimbledon Common en route to Birmingham Airport, where he will complete the final day of his tour.
