Home for key workers and those in need of aid
Plans have been approved for a derelict building in Merton Road, Wimbledon, to be demolished and replaced with 17 flats, including some for those in need of assisted living.
Nine of the homes will be available as part of a shared-ownership scheme to allow first-time buyers and key workers on lower incomes such as nurses, teachers and police officers to secure a foot on the property ladder.
The development, near the junctions with Pelham and Balfour Roads, will also include eight self-contained assisted living units fully accessible for people with learning disabilities. This part of the block will feature a communal lounge and staff accommodation.
The design of the proposed building, including the height and the materials used, has been influenced by the characteristics of the nearby properties. The flats will also include solar panels to power lighting.
Work on the flats is due to start in November this year and they will be ready for occupancy by the end of 2012.
The assisted living accommodation will be provided by Ability Housing Association, a registered social landlord which specialises in providing people with housing and support services to enable them to live more independent lives. The shared ownership units will be developed by Thames Valley Housing Association.
Merton Council cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration Councillor Andrew Judge said: "At long last Merton will be able to replace the derelict eyesore on this site with a building of quality. We have worked closely with the architect to produce an excellent design for both the building and gardens.
"We have a fundamental obligation to provide good quality life long homes for those with disabilities and this building reflects that. We have also been concerned to provide homes for those who do not find it easy to buy their first home at the moment with the very high level of deposits and income required."
