An Autumn Of Art In Wimbledon


Town centre arts events coming soon

An Autumn of Art is being promised in Wimbledon town centre after Love Wimbledon has teamed up with a number of local arts organisations and creative people.

It will include a range of free artistic activities for four weekends (including Fridays) in Love Wimbledon's ArtShed on The Piazza, outside Morrisons.

In partnership with Merton Arts Trail and Wimbledon Bookfest, these will range from creative workshops with The Polka Theatre, to activities by students from Wimbledon College of Art.

There will also be artistic demonstrations and performances happening in many different venues around town during September and October.

Centre Court Shopping Centre is celebrating its 21st birthday with performing arts shows, CultureBlast – a series of events happening in Wimbledon library by Merton Council Arts team and Wimbledon Odeon is showing live, world class opera, theatre and ballet performance.

James Taylor and contemporaries from Wimbledon College of Art take over the ArtShed – lots of mess and fun. Join in the activities in the build up to the Merton Arts Trail weekend open house, on The Piazza. Open: Fri 12 – 5, Sat 10 - 4, Sun 11- 4

Wimbledon Odeon cinema is screening Royal Opera House’s live production of ‘Turandot’ as part of their Culture Plus programme. 7.15pm

Thurs 19
Def Leppard's 'Hysteria' is screening at Wimbledon Odeon as part of their Culture Plus programme. 8.30pm

On The Piazza
Local artist Isabelle Southwood, creator of the Stag at Wimbledon station, is painting with food to support Merton Arts Trail in the ArtShed on the Piazza. Open daily

To launch BookFest, The Polka Theatre is taking over The ArtShed - take part in creating a planet using recycled materials or join the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland – activities and workshops. 12 -4.30

• The Poetry Takeaway on The Piazza – where you can have a tailor-made poem created FOR FREE by professional poets. Just turn up, hand them a subject and they will create a poem for you

• The New Piazza Market selling artisans crafts and gifts

• Wimbledon Library are throwing their doors open inviting you to come and enjoy a full day of workshops and activity.

• Centre Court Shopping Centre bring their 21st Birthday celebrations to a close with their Autumn/Winter fashion and dance show on the lower mall.

Beyond Words, a non-readers bookclub evening at The Wimbledon Library by Bookfest. Sheila Hollins, the editor and co-author of ‘Books Beyond Words’ for teenagers and adults with learning and communication difficulties, will be hosting. 4.30pm

Wimbledon Film Club has arranged for ‘Therese Desqueyroux’ to be screened at the hmvcurzon in Wimbledon in support of Wimbledon Bookfest. 8pm

See the best of the best of young writing in Merton. The Artshed is showcasing budding authors from local schools as part of Bookfests’ young writer’s competition.11am – 4pm

Love Wimbledon have sponsored children’s event ‘The Wimpy Kid Show’ at Bookfest. A show that brings the books to life with activities, performances and quizzes, it’s a must-attend event for all ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ fans. 2pm – 3pm

Merton Arts Teams' CultureBlast takes place at Wimbledon Library. A revolutionary collection of arts including Hip-Hop, children’s activities and screenings of art films in the upper gallery. 11am – 6pm
