"Celebrating Communities" in our borough
Libraries in Merton are celebrating Black History Month throughout October with a variety of family events taking place across the borough.
Those who want to indulge in exotic fruit tasting can tickle their taste-buds and try out a selection of some lesser known fruits at a free event being hosted by Morden library.
Mitcham library is hosting Black literature-themed events with a free Black Literature Highlights talk and a Story Time for Under 5s. Donald Hope library is hosting a range of events from exploring mythology from the Caribbean and learning how to trace Caribbean Ancestry, to treasure hunts and poetry circles. Black History themed craft sessions are also taking place in Donald Hope, Morden, Pollards Hill, Raynes Park and Wimbledon libraries.
As part of the Black History Month celebrations, a "Celebrating Communities" event is being hosted by three local community groups, Ahmadiyya Community, Morden Baptist Church, and University of the Third Age (U3A) who will be showcasing the work they've done in the community at Morden Library on Tuesday October 30, from 11am - 3pm.
Merton Council's cabinet member for community safety, engagement and equalities, Councillor Edith Macauley said: "Merton is a diverse borough and Black History Month celebrates the great contributions black people make to our community. The range of events taking place in Merton’s libraries are really exciting and a great way for all residents to celebrate and learn more about black history, culture and heritage."
