Merton Police Boss Gets Set For Boxing Challenge


Borough commander to fight former world champ

Merton police boss Darren Williams is in final training to take on one of the giants of boxing at a charity "Night of Champions" event on October 12.

The Borough Commander for Merton will be coming out of retirement after a 27-year break from boxing, to fight double World Heavyweight Boxing Champion American-born "Terrible" Tim Witherspoon. They are pictured on the right.

The charity Night of Champions event at Wellington Barracks in Birdcage Walk, London, will also feature PC Peter Scottow, part of the armed unit based at London City Airport. He will fight former British Heavyweight Champion Julius Francis.

Other exhibition boxing participants include Joe Calzaghe, Richie Woodhall, Glen Catley, Colin Jones, Kevin Mitchell, Colin McMillan, John Ryder, John 'The Beast' Murphy, Robin Reid, Earl Bomber Graham and 'Little' Joe Frazier.

Tickets cost £100 per person (£200 ringside) or £1,000 for a table of 10 (£2,000 ringside). It includes a five-course meal, prepared by MasterChef of Great Britain Michael Godfrey, wine, boxing, entertainment, raffle and an auction.

The event will support The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity raises money to help the hospital provide world-class care for cancer patients, and to support the hospital's pioneering work in cancer research and education.
