Chemical Spillage Causes Wimbledon Leisure Centre Evacuation


Police seal off surrounding streets after chemical leak

Wimbledon Leisure Centre had to be evacuated and surrounding roads closed off after two chemicals were spilled today (April 30).

One person was taken to hospital and six people were treated at the scene after the the spillage happened shortly after 10am.

Police, fire and ambulance were called to the incident and six people were treated after suffering from the affects of the fumes. The evacuated swimmers had to change outside in the street.

It is understood the two chemicals could  have turned into mustard gas if they had been mixed.

Specialist teams arrived and police sealed off Latimer Road with tape while the incident was dealt with - leaving dozens of Leisure Centre users unable to return to collect their belongings.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We sent a number of resources, including an incident response officer, members of our hazardous area response team and three ambulances. 

"We took a patient, as a priority to hospital."

Police said that Bridges Road and other streets surrounding the Leisure Centre were also affected and warned people to avoid the area for several hours.
