Thieves Use Drills To Steal From Parking Meters

Police ask Colliers Wood residents to listen out for suspicious noise

Thieves have been using large drills to steal from parking meters in Colliers Wood in the early hours of the morning.

Following three thefts this week, police are asking residents to keep their eyes and ears open for the parking meter thieves.

The thefts took place over the night of Monday-Tuesday (March 14/15) in University Road, College Road and Cavendish Road.

Dave Russell, from Colliers Wood SNT, said: "The thieves drill out the lock mechanism with a large drill and the drill bit would be at least 6 inches/15 centimeters long. This would be a large powerful electric drilling machine. This would generate quite a bit of noise.

"The engineers that service these machines drive vans with Merton council insignia on them.
If you see anyone tampering with these machines particularly after dark, no matter how professional they look, if they are not using London Borough of Merton vans call 999."
