The Rowans School in Wimbledon has been awarded the British Council’s International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom.

The International School Award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need for life work in today’s world.

The Rowans School’s international work includes their annual International Week where the children are immersed in a variety of cultures as each class takes on a country for the week, ranging from Colombia to France, Mexico to Vietnam, the USA to Germany and China.

Other highlights include exchanging letters and video calls with children in schools around the world, and specialist Music and Art workshops to enhance the children’s creative learning and expression. Parents from the school community also put on an International Fair where the children take a whistle-stop tour of their native countries. At this event, the children not only learn many facts and figures about a wide variety of countries, but they also enjoy sampling some local delicacies.

Scott McDonald, Chief Executive of the British Council, said: ‘The school has earned this prestigious award through its inspirational international work and links with schools abroad.

“The International School Award is a chance for schools to be recognised for their important work bringing the world into their classrooms. This is especially commendable when schools have been deeply affected by the global pandemic. The desire to build on their international work shines through and it is with upmost pride that we celebrate their achievements.

“By embedding an international dimension in children’s education, these schools are preparing their students for successful lives in the UK or further afield, empowering them to be global citizens, and are creating vital opportunities in an increasingly global economy.”

On hearing the news that The Rowans School had received the award, Head Teacher Elizabeth Spratt said, “We are proud to embrace our international community in Wimbledon and celebrate the many languages that The Rowans children speak at home. Our International activities provide our children with a window into different cultures and countries, and supports the work we do in helping them to develop as global citizens. We are immensely proud to receive this International School Award as recognition of our focus and success in this area.”

The Award is now available worldwide in countries such as Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan and Taiwan. Over 6000 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999.
