Police alert over counterfeit currency
Police have warned that "numerous" fake £20 notes are in circulation in Raynes Park town centre.
They said it became apparent on Wednesday (August 17) that counterfeit notes with the number DK51674934 were being tendered in the area.
They have told any local businesses that if they suspect a note is counterfeit they must take it to the police as soon as possible. They will provide a receipt and send the counterfeit to the Bank of England for analysis. If the note is genuine reimbursement will be made.
Sgt Dan Wheatley said: "A counterfeit note is completely worthless and it is a criminal offence to hold or to pass on a note which you know to be counterfeit. Don't get caught out by the counterfeiter; always check your banknotes."
He said some - but not all - counterfeit notes can be spotted by detector pens. A good quality ultra violent lamp can also be used for checking the flourescent feature on £5, £10 and £20 notes (the £50 note does not have the fluorescent feature).
