Local schools praised for excellence
Two Wimbledon schools have been awarded a coveted place in the Mayor of London’s new Schools' Gold Club.
Ursuline High School and Wimbledon Chase Primary School have both been recognised for their exceptional teaching and for ensuring that those children who are disadvantaged, have high aspirations to achieve excellence.
Only 146 schools have been invited to join the club, out of the thousands of primary and secondary schools across London.
Set to launch this autumn, the London Schools’ Gold Club identifies and champions schools in the capital which achieve excellence, especially for disadvantaged students. Through the club, the Mayor of London is inviting the gold standard schools to share with other schools their good practice to help more schools achieve the best for their pupils.
Merton Council cabinet member for education Councillor Martin Whelton said: "Education changes lives, and I am very proud that a Merton secondary and a Merton primary school have both been picked out from the thousands of schools in London as stand-out examples of excellence in providing our children with education and opportunity to shape their futures."
Head of Ursuline High School, Julia Walters said: "It is wonderful that the hard work of our teaching staff and our pupils has been recognised in this way. To be one of a very few schools to be chosen by the Mayor of London is a great achievement."
Head of Wimbledon Chase Sue Tomes said: "We are all proud to have been given this award and will continue working hard to ensure we give the children every opportunity to achieve their full potential and the best possible start to their education."
