Gold Medallist Is Standing In Merton Elections

Fidelis won a gold medal in the relay

A Morden man who is a gold medal winner is to stand as a Labour Councillor in the local elections later this year

Fidelis Gadzama, aged 33, who lives in Alexandra Square in Morden, was part of the mens 4x400  relay team for Nigeria that competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia  and came second with Silver. Olympic organisers stripped the former winners, USA, of first place after doping tests were found to be positive. The Nigerian team were awarded first place with Gold.

Since those games in Sydney, Fidelis worked his way up in African athletics before leaving for the UK in 2007 to join the British Navy where he helped with the fitness training regime for navy personnel.

Unfortunately an old injury made a reappearance 4 years later and he was forced to step down from the Navy on medical grounds in 2011.
