Meet The World's Friendliest Gorilla At Wimbledon's Polka

Toy gorilla comes to life in SW19!

The world's friendliest Gorilla will be swinging into Wimbledon's Polka Theatre this Autumn/Winter season.

Based on the award-winning picture book by former Children's Laureate Anthony Browne, Polka Theatre presents the world-premiere of Gorilla, set to enchant audiences aged 1 - 5 in the Adventure Theatre until February 15.

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Anthony Browne's classic book, Polka are excited to bring Rachel Barnett's endearing and magical adaptation to life on stage for the first time.

The story of Hannah, her father and a very cuddly gorilla is told through puppetry, new musical composition by Julian Butler, a charming set and a giant sprinkling of seasonal Polka magic.

Gorilla is suitable for children aged 3 – 5, with tailor-made "Mini Gorilla" performances for ages 1 – 2. When Hannah's toy gorilla comes to life dressed in her father’s hat and coat, they embark on a thrilling moonlit adventure to fantastical landscapes that will delight and amaze the young audience.

Gorilla is part of the first ever UK-wide Family Arts Festival taking place from 18 October to 3 November and includes an array of theatre, dance, music and visual arts events.

This is also the first time Polka has programmed a special Relaxed Performance, for children with autism, learning disabilities and sensory and communication disorders who will benefit from a more relaxed atmosphere, in the smaller Adventure Theatre.

Roman Stefanski, Associate Director of Polka Theatre and Director of Gorilla, said: "This play is going to be such fun to bring alive to our younger audiences in the Adventure Theatre. I hope you’ll enjoy how we make the two friends fly through the air on their visit to the zoo and the cinema! Hope you like the bananas!"
