Grenade Found On Wimbledon Common

Controlled explosion carried out

Bomb disposal experts were called to carry out a controlled explosion after a suspected live grenade was found on Wimbledon Common.

Police were called to the scene at 5.30pm on Tuesday (March 27). They cordoned off an area of half a square mile and called the bomb disposal team.

The grenade was x-rayed and suspected to be live, so a controlled explosion was carried out. The area was re-opened to the public by 7.30pm.

It was thought to be a live World War II grenade, without its locking pin. The area used to be a wartime training ground.
