Pub bought by new owners

The historic Grove Tavern in South Wimbledon is to close on Tuesday (March 6) after being sold to new owners.

The 19th century pub, which is opposite South Wimbledon tube on the junction of Kingston Road and Morden Road, is a popular music and comedy venue.

But its last comedy night takes place on Monday (March 5) - an evening entitled "One Foot in the Grave" - and it stages a closing party the following night.

Earlier this year, developers were refused permission to demolish the landmark building (left) and replace it with a three-storey structure including a ground floor retail unit and nine flats.

The building had been on the market as a pub for some time, and it is understood that it has now been sold. However, its future remains unclear.

CAMRA South West London Pubs Officer Geoff Strawbridge said: "We can only hope that the new owners will want to reopen the Grove as a pub. It would be a shame if it has been targeted for conversion to a supermarket, as often happens nowadays with no planning application or local consultation necessary."
