Peace Groups Will Gather In Wimbledon For Hiroshima Anniversary

Rushmere Lake ceremony will mark 71st anniversary of first atomic bomb

Local peace groups will join together on Saturday (August 6) commemorate the 71st anniversary of the world's first atomic bomb and the destruction of the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

A 11am there will be a stall outside Wimbledon Library where the public will have the chance to fold paper cranes which will later be used to decorate the commemorative cherry tree in Cannizaro Park.

At dusk (8.30pm) there will be a short ceremony on the shores of Rushmere Lake, Wimbledon Common, followed by candle-floating in the Japanese tradition.

"This is always a very beautiful and moving occasion", said Joanna Bazley, Secretary of Wimbledon Disarmament Coalition/CND. "In the aftermath of parliament's vote to renew Trident it is even more important to remind our politicians of the reality of nuclear weapons."
