Marking Holocaust Memorial Day In Merton

This year's theme is 'Don't stand by'

Merton Council is hosting a special event to mark the annual Holocaust Memorial Day, which takes place in the last week of January.

Merton’s commemoration will be on Monday (January 25) from 7pm – 9pm in the Council Chamber at the Civic Centre in Morden.

This year’s theme is ‘Don’t stand by’ - a call to the community to take a stand against prejudice, discrimination and hate crimes. The evening will include contributions from a survivor of the Bosnia conflict in the early 90s, local councillors, community representatives, religious leaders and the Wimbledon Synagogue choir. The event will be led by Mayor of Merton, Councillor David Chung.

Mayor of Merton, Councillor David Chung, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is an occasion to pause and reflect on the distressing events that have happened in the past and how we as a society can learn from them for the future.

“In Merton we have a community made up of different backgrounds and faiths that we can be proud of. Events like this highlight our unity and we will continue to work together to ensure we won’t stand by and be divided by hatred, discrimination or prejudice but we will celebrate our diversity and be the richer for it.”

An exhibition displaying information about the Holocaust and other genocides is on display in the reception at the civic centre.
