Illegal Waste Carrier Is Fined

Driver also failed to appear in court

A driver has been prosecuted by Wimbledon magistrates for illegally carrying waste metal without a licence.

Barry Fisher, from Colliers Wood, was found carrying a large amount of scrap metal outside the Willow Lane Trading Estate in Mitcham.

When stopped by the police he said he was going to dispose of the metal, but was doing so without a licence. He didn't take up the chance to pay a fixed penalty notice of £180.

He was stopped as part of a planned operation involving Merton and Sutton councils, as well as Merton police.

Fisher failed to appear at Wimbledon magistrates' court on August 24 and the case proceeded in his absence.

After the court heard the evidence from the written statements of Merton council's enforcement team, he was convicted. He was given a fine of £500, ordered to pay prosecution costs of £465 and an offender surcharge of £15. The court also made a collection order.
