Hero Jogger Stops Merton Park Robbery

Hooded youth tries to steal woman's phone

A hero jogger has been praised by police for preventing a lone woman being robbed in Merton Park.

The 42-year-old victim was walking using her mobile phone as she walked through the alley in Dorest Road, near Rutlish Road, at 7pm on Thursday March 1.

A black youth wearing a grey hooded top on a pedal cycle approached her and told her to give him her mobile phone.

Police said the woman was very scared and shouted for help, as she felt threatened and alone in the alley with the young suspect.

At that moment, a jogger came running along and came to her aid. The youth quickly fled empty-handed on his bike and was not seen again. The man asked if the victim if she was OK, to which she replied: "Yes".

The man then continued on his way without leaving any details, prior to police arriving on the scene.

Investigating officer TDC Paul Fagence, Merton Burglary and Robbery Team said: "Thanks to the intervention of this jogger, the offender fled scared and empty-handed. We'd really like to speak to this man to say thanks on behalf of the victim, and to ask if he could help as a direct witness who may be able to help us identify and arrest the suspect."

If YOU were the jogger, or may have any information at all, please contact PC Paul Fagence on 0208 649 3221 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
