New Council Assistant Director Appointed

Paul Evans will work for Merton and Richmond

A new assistant director working for both Merton and Richmond councils covering coroporate governance has just been appointed.

Paul Evans, aged 45, will formally take up his new post as joint assistant director of corporate governance at the end of September. The role will also assume the duties of monitoring officer for both councils.

Paul joins Merton and Richmond from Liverpool City Council where he was city solicitor and monitoring officer. He was recruited to Liverpool City Council to lead a two-year programme to improve ethical standards, governance arrangements and political exchanges in a robust environment.

He takes over the reins at Merton and Richmond from current assistant director of corporate governance Helen White, who is returning to her home country, New Zealand, at the beginning of October.

He said: "I am delighted to be joining Merton and Richmond Councils. This is an exciting and challenging time to be in local government and I look forward to being part of a successful legal team and to oversee both councils' corporate governance.

"There are clearly questions around how legal services will be structured in the future, and Merton and Richmond are already ahead of the game when it comes to effectively sharing legal services."
