New Parking Bay Plans For Kingston Road

Businesses welcome parking proposals

Businesses in Kingston Road, Wimbledon, have welcomed plans to build nine parking bays near their shops.

Merton council is proposing to create the bays on the main road - with five on one side of Kirkley Road, near the Post Office, and four on the other side, opposite Wimbledon Fire Station (see picture on the right).

The pavement there is wide enough to accommdate the parking bays, and it is proposed to offer Pay & Display parking from 10am-4pm on Monday to Saturday, with 20 minutes of free parking.

A public consultation is now underway and Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond will be meeting with local businesses on January 31.

Angela Yates, owner of the Gooseberry Bush Centre on Kingston Road, said: "This is good news, but I would like parity with other shopping parades in Merton.

"Why can't there be more parking bays further down the road, as well as bays on the side roads feeding into Kingston Road? The council are getting a lot more from us in business rates than they are in punitive parking charges."
