Mitcham Man Charged With University Lecturer's Murder


He is also charged with GBH after earlier incident

Detectives investigating the murder of lecturer Daniel Young have charged a 37-year-old man.

Mark Loveridge, of Borough Road, Mitcham was last night (January 28) been charged with murder.

He was also charged with causing grievous bodily harm after an earlier incident in Lewis Road, Mitcham, where a 23-year-old man suffered stab wounds to his buttocks. He suffered non-life threatening injuries.

He will appear before Bromley magistrates via a video link today (January 29).

Police had been called by the London Ambulance Service to reports of an injured man at 8.07am on Tuesday January 19. An air ambulance attended the scene, but Mr Young (pictured below) was pronounced dead.

His last moments were seen on CCTV images showing as he walked to Morden tube station on the way to work.

He was heading for his second day in a new job as a teaching fellow at Coventry University's London campus. He previously been the General Manager of the Antoinette Hotel in Wimbledon Broadway for many years.

Police have also been investigating an earlier incident at 7.25am in Lewis Road, Mitcham, where a 23-year-old man suffered stab wounds to his buttocks. He suffered non-life threatening injuries and remains in hospital.

A post-mortem examination at St George’s Hospital has found the cause of Mr Young's death to be a stab wound. Police are not discussing where on the body this was.

On Tuesday, 19 January a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of wasting police time and suspicion of murder. He was subsequently bailed to return on a date in early March pending further enquiries.

On Thursday, 21 January a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was taken to a south London police station and subsequently bailed to return in late February pending further enquiries
