Take Off Into Space At Merton's Libraries

Cosmic theme for reading challenge

All space cadets and alien adventurers are invited to the lift off of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge taking place in Merton's libraries from July 17.

With the sci-fi theme of "Space Hop", youngsters across the borough can travel through space and time, battle alien life forms and learn about the planets while improving their confidence with reading.

The challenge encourages children to read six books over the summer holidays and rewards readers with prizes, bookmarks and stickers throughout their journey. Nearly 3,000 young people signed up in 2009 and organisers hope this year's cosmic adventure will be even bigger.

Each library is hosting a range of events from Friday July 16, including treasure hunts, space themed craft sessions, alien biscuit and cake decorating.
