Local Democracy Week In Merton

Chance to meet local councillors and MPs

Local Democracy Week kicks off on Monday (October 13) with activities lined up to give future voters of the borough the chance to meet local councillors and decision makers.

Merton primary schools will be shown around the Civic Centre in Morden during the week, which will include a visit to the Council Chamber where key decisions on the borough are debated and decided.

Pupils will also get the chance to meet the Mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina in her parlour.

Local MPs Siobhain McDonagh and Stephen Hammond will offer lucky students from their constituencies a tour of the Houses of Parliament and local councillors will attend Merton Children’s Council annual general meeting, at Aragon Primary School, to give a talk and take part in a question and answer session.

Cabinet member for children’s services, Councillor Maxi Martin said: “Local Democracy Week is a great way to give school children their first taste of how a local authority is governed. Helping young people engage in local politics at an early age is important because they will be the decision makers in the future.”
