Free driver training on offer
Merton Council's fleet of refuse vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are being installed with side bars which will make the roads safer for cyclists.
There is a lot of space under a lorry and the side bars act as a fence to prevent cyclists and pedestrians becoming trapped under the vehicle.
The installation (see right) is part of the council’s drive to make cycling safer and make its heavy goods vehicles compliant with the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS).
Merton is offering free Safer Urban Driver Training for all companies in Merton whose operatives need to complete their Certificate of Professional Competence accreditation. It can be booked online at www.safeurbandriving.co.uk
Merton's director for environment and regeneration, Chris Lee said: "More and more people are turning to cycling as a preferred method of getting around. Fitting out refuse trucks with side bars drastically reduces the chance of serious injuries to cyclists. The training programmes organised by our road safety team show our commitment to helping cyclists and motorists stay safe on the roads."
