Man Jailed For Street Attack On His Wife
Court hears of "cowardly attack"
A Colliers Wood man has been jailed for a series of domestic violence assaults on his wife, after he was arrested in the street.
Samant Nayeck, aged 36, has been sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment after Kingston Crown Court heard about the "cowardly attack" on his 33-year-old wife.
The court heard that police were called to Colliers Wood on January 23 where a man was reported to be attacking a woman in the street. Officers stopped Nayeck and found his frightened wife nearby. She had suffered facial injuries, cuts and bruises.
Police immediately arrested Nayeck (left) and took him into custody.
Officers ensured the victim received medical care, followed by professional investigative support and encouragement from the Police Community Safety Unit (CSU) based at Wimbledon Police Station.
The defendant was already on bail for a previous offence. Although he denied the offences, he was later charged with assault and remanded in custody.
Detective Sergeant Grant Donnachie of Merton CSU said: "This was a cowardly attack by an estranged husband on his wife, in full public view on the street. I hope this conviction shows that we won't tolerate domestic violence of any kind. Offenders can hurt and harm their victims in many ways, not just through physical attacks.
"We're here to support any victim living with domestic abuse, whom I would urge to call police any time, to report any offences.”
Chief Superintendent Dick Wolfenden added: "Merton Borough is a top performer in relation to reducing reported offences of domestic violence. In the last twelve months there have been 20% less offences - together with partners and effective sentencing we hope to make further progress in eradicating this crime against the most vulnerable."

Merton Police in partnership with Merton Council also run a " One Stop Shop " advice surgery for victims of domestic crime, or anyone living through domestic abuse, held weekly at Morden Baptist Church on Mondays from 9.30am-12.30pm.
