Passers-By Thwart Wimbledon Village Robbery

Masked men attempt to snatch bag

Two masked men fled empty-handed when brave passers-by stopped them robbing a man in Wimbledon Village last Tuesday (November 1).

The 35-year-old victim was carrying a bag along Church Road at around 12.30pm when the masked men tried to grab his bag.

A struggle followed and the man fell to the ground. As he shouted for help, a number of passers-by ran over to help.

The suspects then fled empty-handed and got into a purple Volvo car, which drove off towards nearby Lancaster Road.

Two men were then seen to leave that car, and get into a dark coloured Lexus vehicle, which drove off towards the direction of Putney.

Police were called and a number of witnesses came forward. The purple Volvo car has been recovered by police for a full forensic analysis. The other car has not yet been located.

DC Tony Davies, of the Merton Burglary and Robbery Team, said: "This was a cowardly attack on a man going about his business in Wimbledon, but thanks to the bravery of local people nearby coming to his aid, the thieves got away empty-handed and the man was not badly hurt.

"If you saw what happened and haven't yet spoken to police, or if you saw a dark Lexus car driving away from the Lancaster Road area towards the direction of Putney, around 1pm, please let us know. We are really keen to speak to any other witnesses, and to find this second dark coloured Lexus car."
