Mayor's Charity Donation Success

Money raised in last year's Mayoral year

Last year's Mayor of Merton, Councillor Oonagh Moulton, donated £41,552.45 to Macmillan Cancer Support and Wimbledon Civic Theatre Trust, money raised during her Mayoral year.

Cheques were presented by the former Mayor to Mike Rappolt, Chairman of Wimbledon Civic Theatre Trust (WCTT) and Marsha Beresford, former Chairman of Merton Macmillan Cancer Support at a ceremony held by the current Mayor, Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender.

During her time as Mayor (2010-11), Councillor Moulton (right) held events such as dinners, concerts, sponsored walks and a charity ball at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, which all contributed towards the donations.

She said: "My time as Mayor was fantastic. It was a great way for me to meet people around the borough and see the many groups and organisations who work so hard.

"I chose both of these charities for their hard working volunteers and trustees many of whom are already known to me and for the fact that both are raising money specifically for the benefit of residents of our borough.

"Through the money we have raised Macmillan Cancer Support have said they have exceeded their target to fund a Consultant Nurse for Palliative Care at the Royal Marsden and WCTT are now able to recruit a Youth Worker for special drama projects working with challenging pupils in Merton's secondary schools."

Parkinson's UK is the main charity of choice for this year’s Mayor, Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender, who is also raising money for Merton Music Foundation, Merton Concert Band, Merton and Morden Guild, Merton Vision, Merton Priory Trust, Crossroads and Age Concern.

Forthcoming charity events include a medieval banquet on 24 September and the Mayor’s Civic Service on 30 September held at Trinity United Reformed Church in Wimbledon.
