'A' Level Joy For Wimbledon Pupils

Local youngsters better than national average

Merton's sixth form students achieved above the national average in their 'A' level results, with Wimbledon's Ursuline College getting a 100% success rate for A* - E grades.

The majority of students across the borough achieved above the 98% average for A* - E grades.

Wimbledon College, Raynes Park High School sixth form and the new Rutlish and Ricards Lodge combined sixth form all achieved 99% A* to E grades.

Looking at A* - C grades, Ursuline and Wimbledon College were above the 76% national average, achieving 85% and 83% respectively, both showing year-on-year improvement over the past three years. Both Schools also showed improvements in achieving A* - A grades, with Wimbledon College exceeding the national average.

Merton Council cabinet member for education Councillor Martin Whelton said: "This year is the first time when sixth forms have been available at all Merton schools and the results are very encouraging and a great foundation for future success.

"They are also testament to the hard work and dedication that teachers, students and parents/carers have put in over the past two years.  These results further strengthen our improving reputation for providing Merton’s young people with good, local education right up to 'A' Level."

Councillor Oonagh Moulton, the Conservatives' Education spokesman added: "Congratulations to all Merton's hardworking students, teachers and parents on their impressive 'A' level results. This is an encouraging picture for the borough’s sixth forms and I am particularly delighted to see the first set of A-level results for students attending the new sixth forms introduced across Merton by the previous Conservative administration back in 2010.

"Recent league tables show Merton to be one of the best performing local authorities in England when it comes to students gaining places at top universities. Whether they are going into employment, higher education or training, these well-earned results will serve the borough's young people well and I wish them all the best for the future."
