Pay Tribute On Armed Forces Day

Dedication service at Civic Centre

Merton Council is encouraging residents to join in paying tribute to the UK's armed forces during Armed Forces Day on Saturday June 30.

Merton will show its support for Armed Forces Day starting with a dedication service for a new war memorial outside the Civic Centre in Morden at 9.45am.

The service will be led by the Revd Canon Graham Derriman, Chaplin to the Royal British Legion and will be followed by the raising of the Union flag, led by Deputy Mayor of Merton, Councillor John Bowcott and the Queen's Deputy Lieutenant for Merton, The Right Honourable Sir John Wheeler, JP.

They will be joined by local representatives from the Royal British Legion, Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhain McDonagh, Council Leader Councillor Stephen Alambritis, and other local councillors.

Sir John and Councillor John Bowcott will then take the salute as the parade progresses along London Road, Morden to St Lawrence's Church in St Helier, where a multi-faith service will be held at 11am.

Members of the Royal British Legion, Army Cadets from Wimbledon College, Air Training Corps, the Scouts, Police Cadets, Territorial Army, the City of London Fusiliers, and other organisations will join in to offer respect to those who serve in the armed forces in the UK and overseas.

Cabinet member for children's services, Councillor Maxi Martin, who is organising the event, said: "This year’s theme is "Honouring the Living" where we can help celebrate and recognise those brave people who do so much to keep us safe at home and abroad."
