Armed Forces Day Event In Merton


Parade will march through Morden

A parade will march through the streets of Morden to honour members of Merton's armed forces on Saturday June 28.

This year's Armed Forces Day will start with a dedication service at the war memorial outside of the Civic Centre at 9.45am. Shortly after this at 10am, the parade will begin leaving Abbotsbury Road and turn into London Road. It will walk past the Civic Centre arriving at St Lawrence Church for 10.45am where Reverend Ray Skinner will lead a multi-faith service.

At the dedication service the Union Flag will be raised by Mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina and the Queen’s Deputy Lieutenant for Merton, The right Honourable Sir John Wheeler, JP. Local representatives from the Royal British Legion, Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhain McDonagh, Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond, Leader of the council, Councillor Stephen Alambritis and other local councillors across Merton will be present.

Members of the Royal British Legion, Army Cadets from Wimbledon College, the Territorial Army, the Scouts and Guides, Air Training Corps and the Wimbledon and Wandle Scout Band will all be attending, paying their respects to the armed forces in the UK and overseas.

Mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina said: "Armed Forces Day in Merton is always a special occasion. I am looking forward to taking part in this year's event and commemorating the invaluable contribution our armed forces make to our country."
