Local Comedian Reaches Capital Final

Could Don be the 'Fresh Comedian of 2014'?

Morden comedian Don Tran has beaten more than 160 new London acts during the last year to make the final of the Comedy Knights Fresh Comedian of 2014.

The final takes place on Wednesday September 17 at The Forge in Camden.

Here he answers a few questions about himself:

What area of London do you currently live in or most associate yourself with? Morden.

How would you describe your act in five words? Deadpan one-liners.

How long have you been doing comedy? Since 2008.

What is your day job? None atm.

What has been your worst job? Door-to-door sales.

Why do you love comedy? Because it's not a real job.

Who is your hero? Paul Erdős.

What made you bite the bullet and start performing? Masochism.

What was your first gig like? I cannot remember. It was most likely bad, but not bad enough for me to quit.

What has been your biggest achievement so far? Filling the unforgiving minute with 60 seconds' worth of distant puns.

What has been your favourite gig? Saturday night at The Comic's Lounge in Melbourne.

And describe your worst? I once did a gig where the audience had been drinking all afternoon. When I came on at about 9.30pm, I was greeted with, "Hey, it's Jackie Chan!"  Later on, someone yelled, "Geez, nips are getting bigger these days". It was racist, but at least someone noticed that I had been working out at the gym.

Weirdest heckle? Not sure. I rarely get heckled, and when I do, I tend to dead bat hecklers without really listening to them.

What is the best thing about being a comedian? Never having to wait more than a day or two between writing something new and finding out whether it cuts the mustard.

What is the biggest lesson you've learnt? I'm better at editing than writing, so I may as well write any old rubbish and have something to edit later.

Where do you hope to be in ten years with your comedy? I am in comedy today mostly because I am incapable of thinking ten years ahead.

Any other aspirations? Too late for that now.

What's you favourite joke by another act or from your childhood? Rich Hall's bit about how every Tom Cruise movie is the same.
