Heritage Discovery Day Is Coming Soon
Merton Council is encouraging residents young and old to come along to its second annual Heritage Discovery Day on Saturday March 28 from 10am-4.30pm.
Led by the council's Heritage and Local Studies team, this annual event is a celebration of Merton's rich heritage and is themed around the borough's 50th anniversary.
Activities on the day range from talks and workshops, to photographic displays, IT taster sessions, competitions and heritage stalls. A number of the activities will be run in partnership with local heritage organisations. The family-friendly event has something for everyone and admission is free. At the Discovery Day, residents will also have the chance to find out more about the council’s new Carved In Stone project, which explores the lives of Merton residents who served during the First World War, especially those who are commemorated on local memorials and grave markers across the borough. With activities themed around the borough’s 50th anniversary, this is also a good opportunity for people to mark Merton’s Golden Jubilee.
Merton Council's cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper said: "Following the huge success of last year’s Discovery Day, I’m delighted that we’ve made this an annual event. I would encourage everyone to attend the Discovery Day and find out about your local heritage through a range of interesting and interactive activities, with something to suit everyone. This will also be a great opportunity to find out more about the Carved in Stone project which explores Merton's role in the First World War as well as hearing from local organisations about the borough's heritage."
