Learn About Wimbledon's History At Heritage Discovery Day


Annual event will showcase Merton's heritage

Local history enthusiasts are set to flock to Morden Library tomorrow (May 12) for the annual Heritage Discovery Day.

This free showcase for Merton's heritage has grown in popularity year on year, with the 2018 event featuring:

  • Open air cinema from the London Screen Archives, outside the Civic Centre, showing a range of historical films.
  • The programme will include footage of Wimbledon suffragettes, to mark 100 years since British women were granted the vote.
  • Bitesize local history talks on community heritage; the history of women's suffrage; The Canons and Mitcham Cricket Green; jazz pioneer Sadie Crawford; memories of childhood in Merton and the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
  • Children's activities include block-printing, stained glass colouring, dressing up and badge making.
  • Visitors can view photographic displays on Merton claims to fame, the history of Morden and a special feature to mark 30 years since Wimbledon won the FA Cup.
  • The Heritage marketplace also features stalls from Merton's many museums, heritage attractions and community group.

The Discovery Day will run from 12.30 - 4.30pm at Morden Library, Merton Civic Centre.
