Holocaust Memorial Event Marks 75th Anniversary

Annual event at the Civic Centre

Residents and members of the public are invited to attend Merton's annual Holocaust Memorial event on Monday (January 27) from 7pm to 9pm.

The event to be held in the Council Chamber marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Aushwitz-Birkenau. This year's event will mark the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht and will include a presentation by a survivor of the events of 1938.

Local members of the community including faith groups will be present. There will also be a presentation by members of the Al-Rhama Islamic Centre in Muswell Hill who received community support following an arson attack in 2013.

Mayor of Merton, Councillor Krystal Miller, who will be attending the event said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember those who were victims of terrible genocides in the Second World War and in more recent times.”

Cabinet member for community safety, engagements and equalities, Councillor Edith Macauley, said: “We must never forget those who suffered during the holocaust and other genocides. In Merton we are lucky to live in a borough rich in diversity, and this event will see all residents unite.
