Mark Holocaust Memorial Day In Merton

Wimbledon Synagogue Choir take part in event

Merton residents are invited to a special event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Tuesday January 27, 7pm-9pm, in the Council Chamber.

The theme for this year's event is 'keep the memory alive' and the evening will include contributions from a holocaust survivor, local politicians, community representatives, religious leaders and the Wimbledon Synagogue Choir. The event will be led by the Mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina.

Holocaust Memorial Day this year marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia.

Councillor Agatha Akyigyina said: "In Merton we are proud of our diverse community and this event shows our commitment to continually working to erase hatred, prejudice and discrimination. Holocaust Memorial Day is an occasion to reflect on the distressing events of the past and how we can learn from them."

An exhibition displaying information on the Holocaust and other genocides will be on display in the Civic Centre.
