Local library competition is underway
Libraries in Merton are calling on adults to get reading as part of this year's Six Book Challenge.
Any borough residents over the age of 16 can take part in the challenge to read six books by June, and can register through any of Merton's libraries.
Those who complete the challenge will be awarded with a certificate from the Mayor and can win local and national prizes including a cultural weekend stay in London.
Library staff and volunteers are on hand to help residents choose books and will help readers to complete a diary about their reading experience.
Now in its fourth year, the national reading scheme is the brainchild of independent charity, The Reading Agency. Merton Council has been part of the scheme since the beginning with each year proving more successful than the last. 2011 saw 125 people sign up to the challenge.
Reading diaries from residents taking part in previous years reveals how many people develop a love of reading and experience improved confidence and increased motivation from being involved in the challenge.
Cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Martin Whelton said: "The six book challenge has played an important role in learning and confidence for the hundreds of adults taking part.
"Merton's libraries have also seen a high participation record in this programme, especially amongst those residents who have English as a second language. I am looking forward to seeing more people than ever sign up and take part in the challenge."
