Merton's Summer Reading Challenge
This year's Summer Reading Challenge kicks off on Saturday July 16 and Merton's libraries are calling for children aged four to 11 to join in.
The 2011 challenge has a circus theme, so every child who has ever wanted to tame lions, walk a tightrope or perform in the big top, will find something to enjoy.
The 'Circus stars' challenge asks children aged four to 11 to read six books over the summer holidays. There are prizes to be won for those who meet the challenge, and with nearly 3,000 entrants in 2010, there will be a lot of competition.
Each library in the borough is hosting a range of events throughout the summer, including treasure hunts and circus-themed craft sessions.
Merton Council's cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Martin Whelton said: "The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to make reading fun and entertaining for young children, with lots of free events across the borough all summer.
"Merton's libraries are full of exciting children’s books and I look forward to seeing more children enjoying learning."
