Merton Mayor's Ball Helps Charity

Irish-themed night raises funds

The recent Merton Mayor's Ball for charity raised around £24,000.

The event had an Irish theme, as it was held on St Patrick's Day at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon.

The Mayor, Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender (left), said: "This is an amazing sum of money to have raised, thanks to the superb hard work of the ball committee and generosity of our local businesses. I was also ably supported by my Mayoral team.

"I always like meeting our many groups and organisations from the borough who give us such great support. My charities have many hard-working volunteers and trustees – I already know lots of them and it’s great to know their hard work helps our residents so empathetically.

"We were also very pleased to be joined by our guest MC, the radio presenter Mr David Jensen, and Mr Stephen Hammond MP, who was our auctioneer. Their support helped create a very enjoyable evening for everybody."

The Mayor is also planning to raise more money for her nominated charities by hosting a golf day on April 26 and a medieval banquet on May 4.

  • Parkinson's UK is the main charity of choice for the Mayor, who also supports the charities Merton Music Foundation, Merton Concert Band, Merton and Morden Guild, Merton Vision, Merton Priory Trust, Deen City Farm, Crossroads and Age Concern.
