Merton Police Give Thanks At Award Event

Commendation awards handed out

Brave and kind acts by members of the police and public in Merton were honoured at a special event in Wimbledon.

The 'Stars of 2012' ceremony was attended by Olympic gold medallist Sophie Hosking (left), from Wimbledon, and Dragon's Den star Theo Paphitis.

Merton Police organised the event, which took place at the All England Tennis Club.

Among those who received one of the 24 commendations handed out were John Goddard, co-ordinator of the Merton Street Pastors - a team of volunteers who spend Friday nights offering help to those out late in Wimbledon and Mitcham.

Wimbledon PC Terry Elmer, who died in 2012, was honoured for his dedication to Merton Police. Future awards for Constable of the Year will be named the Terry Elmer Award.
