Merton Youngsters Are Bowled Over

First Merton Primary Schools' Bowls Tournament

The inaugural Merton Primary Schools' Bowls Tournament took place at Merton Park Bowls Club on June 23.

Teams from Cramner, Joseph Hood, Poplar and Wimbledon Park Primary Schools, supported by bowlers/coaches from Mitcham, Merton, Merton Park and Wimbledon Park Bowls Clubs, battled it out during the day to be the first to win the new Merton Primary Schools' Bowls Shield.

Having received coaching from the clubs during the preceding month, the final was played using a round robin format with each school playing the others.

Organisers said the children's behaviour and enthusiasm were exemplary and the last match of the day saw Wimbledon Park Primary emerge as champions.

Deputy Mayor of Merton, Councillor Laxmi Attawar, who presented the awards, said: "It's fantastic to see how enthusiastic the schoolchildren of Merton are about bowls. They’ve shown that bowls is a sport that is suitable for all age groups.

"I'd like to congratulate all the pupils who took part in the schools’ tournament as well as the trainers at each of Merton’s bowls clubs who’ve worked hard to encourage young people to take up bowls as a hobby."
