Top Marks For Merton Schools

League table success for local pupils

A number of schools in Merton, including several in Wimbledon, have been praised for showing sustained improvements in the latest school league tables.

Rutlish School in Merton Park has has ranked in the top 200 schools in England that have shown the greatest sustained improvement in their GCSE attainment over the past four years.

The schools in the top 200 list have all improved year-on-year, since 2007, in terms of the percentage of students achieving 5 A*-C GCSE or equivalent passes, including maths and English. These have then been ranked by the size of the total increase between 2007 and 2010.

Councillor Karin Forbes (Merton Park Ward Independent Resident, pictured left), said: "This is a fantastic achievement for the school and reflects the hard work, commitment and talent of all staff and students."

Three Wimbledon primary schools also have cause for celebration with Holy Trinity Church of England School, Dundonald Primary School and Bishop Gilpin Church of England School all in the top 150 primary schools in England for attainment. 

Singegate Primary School in Wimbledon and St Mark’s Primary School, Mitcham, feature in the top 50 schools where there has been significant improvement for individual pupils as they move up the school.

Melrose special community school in Mitcham is also in the top five per cent of all UK schools for individual pupil progress according to the government’s contextual value added measure. The school is also in the top 20% of UK special schools.

Merton Council cabinet member for education Councillor Peter Walker (left) said: "All our teachers across Merton’s schools continue to work very hard to provide a quality education for a huge range of pupils throughout the borough.  Melrose has done extremely well in its results as have our mainstream schools.  They are a clear demonstration that working hard achieves results."
