Wimbledon Pupils Write Olympic Lyrics

Song aims to inspire local youngsters

Wimbledon youngsters have helped write Merton's official song for the Olympics - Hand in Hand.

The song has been produced after Merton Music Foundation ran a council-sponsored songwriting competition to write an Olympic tune.

Competition winners Beeta Davoudi and Mia Albel Stevenson from the Priory primary school in Queen's Road, Wimbledon, wrote the lyrics for the second verse, as well as the song's rap sections.

Jessican Dawkins, from SS Peter and Paul School in Mitcham wrote the lyrics and melody for the first verse and the chorus.

Their work was the best from 58 entries from 11 schools, after pupils were asked to focus their song-writing ideas on the theme 'to encourage and inspire'.

Teacher and musician Phil Merriman, along with Merton Music Foundation Deputy Director Soo Bishop, worked with the girls to develop their original ideas.

Phil and Soo added the music with Soo singing lead and backing vocals, and Phil playing everything else. The track was then recorded at Crown Lane Studio in Morden by Bill Sherrington with John Merriman producing the final mix.
