Merton UKIP Candidate Is Suspended

Controversial views on his Twitter account

Merton UKIP candidate Andre Lampitt has been suspended from the party after an outcry over views he shared on his Twitter account.

Mr Lampitt is standing in the St Helier ward for the borough council elections, due to take place on May 22.

The Zimbabwean builder featured in a UKIP TV election broadcast on Wednesday, expressing his views on the effects of immigration into the UK.

But UKIP leader Nigel Farage was since made aware of a number of controversial comments made by Mr Lampitt on his Twitter account. Among them were criticisms for Islam and Nigerians, and a claim that Labour leader Ed Milliband was "not British".

The Twitter acccount has since been removed, and a UKIP spokesman said Mr Lampitt had been suspended from the party immediately pending a full disciplinary process.
