Public Hearing For Morden Tavern Plans

More than 1,100 comments on scheme

Controversial plans for the empty Morden Tavern will now be dealt with by a public hearing.

Merton Borough Council's planning committee had turned down an application for retail units, flats, houses and maisonettes on the site in Central Road, Morden, in January.

But developers Reef Estates appealed to the Planning Inspectorate about the decision made on their £1 million scheme.

Following more than 1,100 responses from local residents about the plans, the planning inspectorate has now decided there will be a public hearing.

A spokesman for the St Helier Pub Group (SHPG) said: "The SHPG are delighted by the huge public support shown by local residents.

"If this does not prove that St Helier not only wants its own pub back but also that if re-opened as a community-owned cooperative its future success will be assured."

The date for the hearing, which will take place in Merton, has yet to be confirmed
